5 Fun Activities To Do On A Rainy Day

So we went through a heat wave here in Philly last week.  However, the past couple of days we experienced horrible storms and lots of rain, which has pretty much bound us to the house.   We go a little stir crazy in the house.  I came up with a couple of “Rainy Day Activities”  for our go to’s for bad weather.  Some of these activities are the old school basics, but we have always found that they are usually the ones that we a blast playing.

So here it is…..

5. Matching game – This has always been a favorite of mine as a kid.   Simple, fun and classic.    My kids always have fun testing their memory by seeing see how quickly they can clear the board by matching up the pairs.

 4. Go Fish/UNO – I forgot how much fun a simple deck of cards can be!  This is something that all my children can join in on.  Well kind of – my three years old yells go fish at every hand and my 1 year pretty much eats the cards, so it really is just me and my 11-year-old playing the game seriously.  But it is a nice way to bring all of us around the table as a family.

3. Building a Fort - Who doesn't love a good fort?  When it's raining out, we got all on with the forts in this house.  My kids get their snacks in their forts, color in their forts and we make a day of it.  This mommy tries to make this a special treat only on rainy days - it keeps it unique!

2. Kid’s Handprint painting – Looking a for a great mommy and me craft, this is it.  It is always fun to look back at their tiny little hands, even if it is only a couple of months.  And is a perfect addition to their art boards in their playrooms.  This is a great craft for dad and grandparents during the holidays, Mother's day, Father's day and just to add to some art to your refrigerator.

1. Home-made Play Dough – Let’s face it you can buy the store-bought play dough but honestly making the play dough with your Toddler is half the fun! This is a great way for kids to express themselves and not to mention a fine motor skill activity as well.

What you’ll need to make Homemade Playdough:

·       1 cup flour

·       1 cup water

·       2 teaspoons cream of tartar

·       1/3 cup salt

·       1 tablespoon vegetable or canola oil

·       food coloring (if desired)

·       Essential Oils (this is what I use) What better way to calm your kids on a rainy day

·       Mix together all the ingredients, except the food coloring and the Essential Oil.

·       Cook over low/medium heat, stirring. Once it begins to thicken, add the food coloring.

·       Continue stirring until the mixture is much thicker and begins to gather around the spoon.

·       Remove the dough onto wax paper or a plate to cool.

·       Once it cools down you can add a couple of drops of the calming essential oil of your choice.  These are the only oils that I will use.

Hope this list gets you through your rainy day to more sunny days back at the pool and beach!!!
